Description

They are perennial herbaceous plants with opposite ovate leaves and yellow flowers collected in a shield. The tops of stems with inflorescences 25–30 cm long, covered with leaves, are cut. Roots and rough stems have no useful properties. The cut is made with secateurs, a sickle or a sharp knife. It is possible to use scythe on large areas. After harvesting, St. John's wort is immediately sent for drying, otherwise it will begin to blacken and rot. The raw materials are dried in well-ventilated rooms. Spread in a thin layer, turning over from time to time. Or they are tied in small bundles and hung in rooms closed from the sun. Artificial drying is carried out at a temperature of up to 40 °C. Dried St. John's wort is stored in dry, light-protected rooms for three years.
